ABOUT US

City of Refuge started in the year 2001 when Mama Comfort and Kofi realized that most children in school going age were just loitering around in the village of Ajumako Kromaim during school hours.

They inquired from folks of the town why these children weren't in school and were told they were orphans and some were fatherless and their mothers had abandoned them to seek livelihood elsewhere.

Touched by their stories they quickly put resources together to put three of them in school and left them in the care of the headmaster. After two months Kofi returned to find out how they were doing, but to their surprise he was told they were not regular in school.

Kofi therefore assembled them as to find out why they were not regular in school. They explained that they went to school on empty stomachs and it was quiet difficult for them to concentrate. Then he got to understand them better.

The complaints they gave included lack of exercise books, other writing materials, school uniforms and shoes.

These issues Kofi deliberated upon with his mother and they funds together to provide them all necessities for school and again left them in the care of the headmaster of the school.

After a month Kofi paid them a visit once more and realized they were doing quiet well this time around. This continued for a year and the children started picking up academically and we're doing very well with attendance and extra curricular activities.

After two years Kofi took up additional 7 of these children off the streets making them 10 in number. Kofi registered the Organization as a non profit organization in 2006, by then we had grown to about 40 children. By then we were not just providing education, but we employed the services of 2 cooks to cook for them twice daily and two teachers who acted as guardians in our absence.

We also made sure we provided them new school uniforms every year. New dresses and shoes were provided every Christmas and dresses that they can wear when they are out of school were provided quarterly.

In 2009 we lost a child after a short illness. So we had each child registered under the National Health Insurance Scheme which takes care of some of the illness except surgery and some major illness.

Currently we have been able to acquire land and build a training centre to help some other teenage mothers get good training in dressmaking in the villages so they can be independent and live moral upright lives.

City of Refuge has been able to replicate this in 2 other villages namely Enyan Assempayin and Enyan Esaadi all of the Central Region of Ghana
